Lionel Standard Gauge 217 caboose with an orange body, maroon roof and cupola, dark green railing, nickel journals, oiling label, and trucks with dimples and slots. This version is the earliest version of the 217 caboose which dates it circa 1926. The 217 was produced in several variations form 1926-1940.

Lionel Standard Gauge 217 caboose with red body and cupola, peacock roof, brass railing & window frames, nickel journals, oiling label, trucks with dimples or slots, and brass plates with black lettering. It also has a screw fastener which attaches the trucks to the frame. Previous versions had cotter pins which held the trucks to the frame. This version is circa 1927-1929.

1930 – 1934
Lionel Standard Gauge 217 caboose with red body and cupola, peacock roof, brass railing & window frames, cooper journals, no oiling label, trucks with have dimples but no slots, and brass plates with black lettering. A D-washer was used to hold the trucks to the frame of the caboose. This version is circa 1930-1934.

Lionel Standard Gauge 217 caboose with red body, cupola, and roof, silver painted railing & window frames, nickel journals, no oiling label, trucks with dimples but no slots, and aluminum plates with black lettering. A D-washer was used to attach the trucks to the frame. This version is circa 1936-1940.
