TYPE R PEERLESS BATTERY MOTOR
1915-1920

The Type R Peerless Battery Motor was made from 1915-1920 by the Lionel Manufacturing Co. This at first was powered by a dry cell battery and then by a toy transformer as electricity became more available. This has a red fiberboard reversing switch for two direction operation. It also was capable of two speed operation through the different gearing. One end of the axle has a belt drive spool and the other end has a 2″ brass gear.

It was used for powering toy oil derricks, Ferris Wheels, carousels, other early toys, as well as small shop equipment. The black base measures about 5″ long, 2 1/4″ wide, and 2 1/4″ high. This is a very early Lionel accessory and sold for $2.50!
