Lionel No. 701 Steam Switcher
General Information
The Lionel No. 701 0-6-0 Pennsylvania Scale Steam Switcher was introduced in 1939 and was issued through 1942. The No. 701 Steam Switcher was available for separate sale, cataloged as Outfit 708. The No. 701 Steam Switcher was also included as a component of a single set along with four scale freight cars in 1941-1942. The No. 701 Steam Switchers was always paired with the No. 701T Pennsylvania Slope Back Tender.
The No. 701 Steam Switcher engine and tender combined measure 17-inches in total length. The engine has a diecast body with marker lights, steel handrails, decorative bell, and molded in boiler details. The engine has an operating headlight and a manual front coupler. The number “8976” is cast into the front of the boiler. The number “8976” is also either rubber stamped or heat stamped on the sides of the cab under the windows. The tender has an operating back-up light that is powered by a lead from the locomotive and is always on. The tender was not equipped with a bell. The tender shell is diecast and has a steel handrail, molded details, and a simulated coal pile. Reversing of the locomotive is accomplished by a conventional E-Unit. The 0-6-0 locomotive has flanges on the center drive wheels. The tender has Bettendorf scale trucks, scale coupler, and scale wheels. This locomotive was made for use on Lionel T-Rail track.
