Lionel No. 700E Steam Locomotives
General Information
The Lionel No. 700E 4-6-4 New York Central Scale Steam Locomotive was introduced in 1937 and was issued through 1942. The No. 700E Scale Steam Locomotive was based on the New York Central 1931 J1-e Hudson Locomotive. The No. 700E Steam Locomotive was available for separate sale, cataloged as No. 700EW. When sold separately, the No. 700EW included a wooden display board with a section of T-Rail Track and an identification plaque. The No. 700E Steam Locomotive was also included as a component of Set No. 709W with four “Rail Chief” streamlined passenger cars in 1937-1941 and as a component of Set No. 707W with four scale freight cars in 1940-1941. The No. 700E Steam Locomotive was always paired with the No. 700T New York Central Scale Tender with whistle.
The No. 700E Steam engine and tender combined measure 24-inches in total length. The engine has a diecast body with marker lights, steel handrails, decorative bell, molded in boiler details, and added scale details. The engine has an operating headlight and a manual scale front coupler. The number “5344” is rubber stamped on the sides of the cab under the windows and appears on the sides of the headlight. Reversing of the locomotive is accomplished by a conventional E-Unit. The locomotive has scale flanges on all six drive wheels. The tender shell is diecast and has steel handrails, molded details, steps on the corners, and a simulated coal pile. The tender is equipped with an operating whistle. The tender has 6-wheel scale trucks, scale wheels and a manual scale coupler. “New York Central” is rubber stamped on the sides of the tender. This locomotive was made for use on Lionel T-Rail track.
From 1937 through 1942, Lionel made minor mechanical changes to the locomotive. Early 700E Locomotives from 1937 through 1939 had a serial number stamped on the underside. Later 700E Locomotives from 1940 and after had no serial number.
In 1938 Lionel introduced the No. 700E Scale Steam Locomotive in kit form cataloged as No. 700K. The complete kit was offered in six Construction Kits numbered 700 K-1 through 700 K-6. The No. 700K Scale Steam Locomotive was undecorated with all component parts in primer gray paint.
