Lionel No. 717 Cabooses
General Information
The Lionel No. 717 New York Central (N.Y.C.) Caboose was introduced in 1940 and was issued through 1942. The No. 717 Cabooses measure 9-inches in length. The cabooses were made of a diecast metal with molded details for the windows and doors. The body, roof, cupola and underside were all painted Tuscan brown. Added details included a stack, rear running lights, steps, ladders, handrails, air brake tank, and catwalk. The car number, “N.Y.C. 19400” and other information were heat stamped on the sides of the car in white. The cabooses were illuminated. The cars have Bettendorf scale trucks, scale couplers, and wheels. These cars were made for use on Lionel T-Rail track.
Lionel also offered the 717 Caboose in kit form. The kit box car was designated as 717K. When assembled and painted, the only difference between the No. 717 Caboose and the No. 717K Caboose is that the No. 717K Caboose had decals instead of heat stamped lettering on the sides.
