Lionel No. 1685, 1686, 1687 Passenger Cars

General Information

The No. 1685 Pullman, No. 1686 Baggage and No. 1687 Observation Passenger Cars were offered by Lionel from 1933 through 1937. The No. 1685, 1686 and 1687 Passenger Cars were offered in promotional uncataloged sets only. These passenger cars did not appear in the Lionel catalog. The cars were marked “Lionel Lines” and numbered in rubber stamped lettering on the sides of the cars. These passenger cars were a continuation of the No. 1695 Pullman, No. 1696 Baggage and No. 1697 Observation Ives Passenger Cars introduced by Lionel in the 1932 Ives Catalog. The No. 1685, 1686, 1687 Passenger Cars measure 12-inches in length. The passenger cars have a painted body, painted roof and floor pan (often referred to as a “fish belly”) and painted door and window inserts. These passenger cars were illuminated, but did not have celluloid strips in the windows. All of the cars have latch couplers.

Variations of the No. 1685, 1686 and 1687 Passenger Cars include changes to the body, roof, floor pan and door and window insert color. Other variations include brass or nickel handrails, brass or nickel baggage door handles, brass or silver observation railing, copper or nickel journals and serif or sans-serif, gold or black rubber stamped lettering. The first cars have 6-wheel trucks. All later cars have 4-wheel trucks.
