General Information
The No. 610 Ives Pullman and No. 612 Ives Observation Passenger Cars were offered by Lionel in the 1931 and 1932 Ives Catalogs. The cars were marked “The Ives Lines” with gold decals applied to the sides of the cars above the windows. The decals were applied over the original “The Lionel Lines” rubber stamped lettering on the cars. The cars also have Ives paper labels glued to the underside of the cars over the original Lionel Corporation rubber stamping. Other than the applied decals and paper labels, the cars were identical to the No. 610, 612 Passenger Cars offered by Lionel beginning in 1926.
In 1933 when Lionel was no longer offering Ives labeled products, the remaining No. 610, 612 Ives Passenger Cars were relabeled as Lionel. These cars were marked “The Lionel Lines” with gold decals applied to the sides of the cars over the windows. The decals were applied over “The Ives Lines” decals. In addition, some of the cars have Lionel paper labels glued to the underside of the cars over the Ives paper labels. Other cars either retained the Ives labels or had no labels.
The No. 610 and 612 Passenger Cars measure 8 3/4-inches in length. The sides of the cars have a single metal insert, painted a contrasting color, to create the doors, window inserts, and identification of the car number and type. The cars all have a clear or frosted celluloid strip in the windows. Some of cars also have a thin white strip covering the upper portion of the windows to simulate shades. The cars are illuminated.
Variations of the Ives No. 610 and No. 612 Passenger Cars include changes to the body color, roof color, insert color, and journals. The cars have air tanks underneath the car with nickel or brass end caps. All of the cars have a brass observation railing. The cars all have latch couplers.
