Ives No. 257 Steam Locomotives

General Information

The No. 257 2-4-0 Steam Locomotive was offered by Lionel in the 1931 and 1932 Ives Catalogs. The Ives No. 257 Steam Locomotive was identical to the Lionel No. 257 Early Steam Locomotive introduced by Lionel in 1930. The only differences being the Ives markings on the brass plates on the sides of the cab and tender and the plate on the pickup assembly. The engine utilized a sheet metal boiler and cab. The frame, steam chest, boiler front and pilot were diecast.

The No. 257 Steam Locomotive has no reverse and runs forward only. The locomotive has an operating headlight. The locomotive has copper and brass trim and a brass plate on the sides of the cab which reads “Ives No. 257”. The No. 257 Steam Locomotive was typically paired with a No. 257T 4-Wheel Tender, but also came with a No. 259T Tender in 1932. The No. 257T Tender has a diecast body and has brass trim and a brass plate on the sides which reads “Ives Lines”. The 259T Ives tender has a sheet metal body and in addition to the “Ives” plates on the sides of the tender, the No. 259T Ives Tender has a circular “Ives” plate on the rear. Both tenders have a latch coupler. The No. 257 / 257T Steam engine and tender combined measure 14 1/2-inches in total length.

The No. 257 Steam Locomotive was offered in black with orange stripes on the sides and in black with no stripes. The No. 257T Tender was typically offered in black with or without orange stripes. However, there is also a version in black with a crackle finish and no stripes.

General Information

The No. 258 2-4-0 Steam Locomotive was offered by Lionel in the 1931 and 1932 Ives Catalogs. The Ives No. 258 Steam Locomotive was identical to the Lionel No. 258 Early Steam Locomotive introduced by Lionel in 1930. The only differences being the Ives markings on the brass plates on the sides of the cab and tender and the plate on the pickup assembly. The engine utilized a sheet metal boiler and cab. The frame, steam chest, boiler front and pilot were diecast.

The No. 258 Steam Locomotive has a manual reverse controlled by a lever inside the back of the cab. The locomotive has an operating headlight. The locomotive has copper and brass trim and a brass plate on the sides of the cab which reads “Ives No. 258”. The No. 258 Steam Locomotive was typically paired with a No. 1663T 8-Wheel Tender, but also came with a No. 259T Tender in 1931. The No. 1663T Tender was identical to the Lionel No. 258T Tender, except for the Ives plates. The No. 16663T Tender has a diecast body and has brass trim and a brass plate on the sides which reads “Ives Lines”. The 259T Ives tender has a sheet metal body and in addition to the “Ives” plates on the sides of the tender, the No. 259T Ives Tender has a circular “Ives” plate on the rear. Both tenders have a latch coupler. The No. 258 / 1663T Steam engine and tender combined measure 14 1/2-inches in total length.

The No. 258 Steam Locomotive was offered in black with orange stripes on the sides and in black with no stripes. The locomotive also came with different color stripes for special sets.
