Lionel No. 2682 Cabooses

General Information

The No. 1682 Caboose was initially offered by Lionel in the 1931 and 1932 Ives Catalogs. When initially introduced in 1931, the cars were marked as “Ives R.R. Lines”. In 1933, the markings were changed to “Lionel R.R. Lines” and then “N.Y.C.”. The Lionel and N.Y.C. versions of the caboose was available from 1933 through 1942. The No. 1682 Cabooses always had a manual coupler. The No. 1682 Cabooses measure 7 1/2-inches in length. The cabooses have lithographed sides and ends with a painted roof and cupola. The frame was always black. From 1936 through 1942, the No. 1679 cabooses were also included in several uncataloged promotional sets. These cars were issued without journals and were designated as No. 1682X. The cars carried the same number “1682”, but the boxes were marked “1682X”.

Variations of the No. 1682 Cabooses include changes to the lithography design, body color, roof color; and copper, nickel, black or no journals. Early cabooses have a latch coupler. Later cabooses have a late style manual box coupler. These cabooses are noted for numerous minor variations, particularly in coupler and truck type.
