Lionel No. 1679 Box Cars
General Information
The No. 1679 Box Car was initially offered by Lionel in the 1931 and 1932 Ives Catalogs. When initially introduced in 1931, the cars were marked as “Ives R.R. Lines”. In 1933, the markings were changed to “Lionel R.R. Lines” and then “Lionel Lines”. The Lionel version of the box car was available from 1933 through 1942. The No. 1679 Box Cars always had manual couplers. The No. 1679 Box Cars measure 7 1/2-inches in length. The box cars have lithographed sides and ends with a painted roof. The frame was always black. The cars have sliding doors that open. The door guides typically matched the color of the doors. From 1936 through 1942, the No. 1679 Box Cars were also included in several uncataloged promotional sets. These cars were issued without journals and were designated as No. 1679X. The cars carried the same number “1679”, but the boxes were marked “1679X”.
Variations of the No. 1679 Box Cars include changes to the lithography design and roof color; different door and door guide color; nickel, copper, black or no journals; and brass knob or stamped door handles. Early box cars have latch couplers. Later box cars have late style manual box couplers. These box cars are noted for numerous minor variations, particularly in roof color variation and truck type. The variations presented below are representative of the significant variations.
Lionel No. 1679 Box Cars
1. No. 1679 Ives Box Car in cream litho with medium blue roof (1931-32). The cars have brown sliding doors and door guides, brass door knobs and copper journals. The cars have latch couplers.




2. No. 1679 Ives Box Car in cream litho with dark blue roof (1931-32). The cars have brown sliding doors and door guides, brass door knobs and copper journals. The cars have latch couplers.




3. No. 1679 Lionel Box Car in cream litho with dark blue roof (1933-35). The cars have brown sliding doors and door guides, stamped door handles and nickel journals. The cars have latch couplers.




4. No. 1679 Lionel Box Car in cream litho with medium blue roof (1935-39). The cars have a “Baby Ruth” candy bar on the sides of the car, bright orange sliding doors and orange door guides, stamped door handles and nickel journals. The cars have latch couplers.




5. No. 1679 Lionel Box Car in cream litho with peacock blue roof (1935-39). The cars have a “Baby Ruth” candy bar on the sides of the car, orange sliding doors and door guides, stamped door handles and nickel journals. The cars have latch couplers.




6. No. 1679X Lionel Box Car in cream litho with light blue roof (1936-42). The cars have a “Baby Ruth” candy bar on the sides of the car, brown sliding doors and door guides, stamped door handles and no journals. The cars have latch couplers.




7. No. 1679 Lionel Box Car in cream litho with maroon roof (1940-42). The cars have “Baby Ruth” in words on the sides of the car, orange sliding doors and door guides, stamped door handles and black journals. The cars have late style manual box couplers.




Lionel No. 2679 Box Cars
General Information
The Lionel No. 2679 Box Cars were introduced in 1938 and were issued through 1942. The No. 2679 Box Cars always had operating couplers. The No. 2679 Box Cars measure 7 1/2-inches in length. The box cars have lithographed sides and ends with a painted roof. The frame was always black. The cars have sliding doors that open. The door guides typically matched the color of the doors.
