Lionel No. 1661 Steam Locomotives
General Information
The No. 1661 2-4-0 Steam Locomotive was offered by Lionel in the 1932 Ives Catalog. The No. 1661E version of the locomotive appeared in the 1933 Lionel Catalog. The engine utilized a sheet metal boiler, cab, frame, steam chest, boiler front and pilot. The locomotive boiler, cab and steam chest are painted black. The frame and pilot are painted dark red. The locomotive has copper and brass trim.
The No. 1661 Locomotive has an operating cast headlight located in the center of the boiler front and two small marker lights located below the headlight. The number “1661” or “1661E” is stamped on a white celluloid insert at the top of the boiler front. The No. 1661 Locomotive has no reverse and runs in one direction only. The No. 1661E Locomotive has a remotely operated reverse. It has a lever on the top of the boiler that engages or disengages the reversing unit. The No. 1661E Locomotives utilize Lionel’s E-Unit reverse unit.
The No. 1661 and No. 1661E Steam Locomotives were both paired with a No. 1661T 4-Wheel Tender. The No. 1661T Tender has a black sheet metal body with lithographed sides. The tender has a red insert on the sides marked “Ives R.R. Lines”. The 1661T Tender has a latch coupler. The No. 1661 / 1661T Steam engine and tender combined measure 12-inches in total length.

Lionel No. 1681 Steam Locomotives
General Information
The No. 1681 2-4-0 Steam Locomotive was offered by Lionel in 1934 and 1935. The engine utilized a sheet metal boiler, cab, frame, steam chest, boiler front and pilot. The locomotives have either a black painted boiler, cab and steam chest or a bright red painted boiler, cab and steam chest. The locomotives with a black cab have an empty slot at the rear of the cab. The locomotives with a red cab have no slot. The frame and pilot are either painted dark or bright red. The locomotive has nickel trim.
