Lionel No. 442 Landscaped Diner

General Information
The Lionel No. 442 Landscaped Diner was introduced in 1938 and was cataloged through 1942. The No. 442 Diner is constructed from a No. 610 Pullman Passenger Car body and roof without end doors or underside details. The passenger car body is mounted on a fiberboard foundation and a curved pressed board base. Two sets of paperboard and wood steps lead to the doors on the front of the diner and there is a curved shrubbery hedge in front of the diner and a small shrub on the outside of each set of stairs. The portion of the base between the hedge and diner foundation has artificial grass. The front and rear body inserts are stamped “Eat”, “Diner” and “Eat” in silver. The sides of the diner are painted either ivory or cream.
The No. 442 Diner is illuminated by a single bulb. The front and rear windows have a translucent celluloid window strip. The underside of the base has a sticker with “No. 442 Diner with 12 volt lamp and The Lionel Corporation, New York, New York” in red. The sticker also contains directions for illumination of the diner. The base of the diner measures 10 ½-inches by 5 1/2-inches and the height of the diner is 3 1/2-inches.
