Lionel No. 184 Bungalow
General Information
The Lionel No. 184 Bungalow was introduced in 1923 and was cataloged through 1932. It was also available as an uncataloged item and on Scenic Plots through 1942. The No. 184 Bungalow was constructed of steel and was either enameled, lithographed or a combination of both. The bungalow has a base, front porch, peaked roof with a dormer and chimney on one side and painted window inserts. The No. 184 Bungalow is illuminated by a single bulb mounted on a bracket inside the house. Lionel also issued a No. 185 Bungalow in 1923 and 1924 which was not illuminated. The No. 185 Bungalow is identical to the No. 184 Bungalow with the exception of the light bracket. Since the bungalows were not numbered, the only way to tell the difference between the two is the presence or absence of the light bracket. The underside of the bungalow has either a decal or is rubber stamped with the Lionel identification and either “184 A-1” or “184-1” in black. The No. 184 Bungalow is 4 ¾ x 2 ¾ x 4-inches high.
The No. 184 and No. 185 Bungalows were primarily sold separately. However, Lionel did issue a set of five No. 184 Bungalows as a No. 186 Bungalow Set from 1923 through 1932 and five No. 185 Bungalows as a No. 187 Bungalow Set in 1923 and 1924.
The No. 184 Bungalow was available in a wide variety of lithographed or painted color combinations. Lionel also issued many bungalows with a combination of painted and lithographed components. In addition, there are two designs for the lithography on the sides of the bungalows. One style pictured a vine between the two side windows on both sides of the house. The other style pictured a vine between the side windows on one side and a flowering tree between the side windows on the other side. Since the roof of the bungalow is easily removed it is possible to essentially create an almost infinite number of variations.
The bungalows were typically assembled by Lionel with the chimney on the roof positioned to the rear of the house. In this manner, the dormer and chimney would be on the left side when viewed from the front. However, Lionel did issue some bungalows with the dormer and chimney on the right side.
The following is a listing of representative variations of the No. 184 Bungalow. Many more variations exist. It is not possible to date individual variations of the No. 184 Bungalows issued by Lionel.
