THE No. 3530 ELECTRO MOBILE POWER CARS

EMD DATA CARD SHOWING REAL LIFE VERSION OF THIS CAR

DESCRIPTION PERTAINING TO ALL 3530’s

Lionel made both blue and black fuel tanks, they can easily be switched
Lionel made long stripe cars first then did both long and short stripes in subsequent production runs these multiple production runs account for the different shades of blue found.
Lionel had trouble with the alignment of the doors on the switch side, on the first cars the top door guide on the switch side is plain as shown in picture # 1 below, the first revision was an inward punched dimple in the center of the door guide as shown in picture # 2 below, the final revision was a rivet in the center of the door guide as shown in picture # 3 below.

1956 cars do not have hole in the top of the coupler head, 1957 cars have hole in the top of the coupler head.
The final assembly of cars used yellow connecting wires.

MOLDED BLUE PLASTIC WITH PAINTED WHITE STRIPE, BLUE AND WHITE HEAT STAMPED LETTERING, “EMD 3530” IS NOT UNDERLINED, LONG STRIPE GOING THROUGH LADDER, BLACK FUEL TANK, TOP DOOR GUIDE ON SWITCH SIDE IS PLAIN

This is Lionel’s first try to keep the door with the switch aligned properly. The little plastic bump shown in the photos below which is molded into every 3530 made was not enough. This first try involved placing a rivet next to the bump but behind the door guide as shown below. This did not work so next they tried punching a dimple into the top door guide as seen in the following car, again no success so they finally used a rivet through the door guide as seen in the following photos of cars.
