Lionel No. 716 Hopper Cars
General Information
The Lionel No. 716 Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Hopper Car was introduced in 1940 and was issued through 1942. The No. 716 Hopper Cars were based on an actual B&O Hopper. The No. 716 Hopper Cars measure 10 1/2-inches in length. The hopper cars were made of diecast metal with molded details for the ladders, hopper bays and ribbed sides. The hopper cars were all painted black. The cars had opening hatch covers that were hinged. The car number, “B&O 532000” “Baltimore and Ohio” and capacity data were heat stamped on the sides of the car in white. The cars have Bettendorf scale trucks, scale couplers, and wheels. These cars were made for use on Lionel T-Rail track.
Lionel also offered the 716 Hopper Car in kit form. The kit box car was designated as 716K. When assembled and painted, the only difference between the No. 716 Hopper Car and the No. 716K Hopper Car is that the No. 716K Hopper Car had decals instead of heat stamped lettering on the sides.
