Lionel No. 715 Tank Cars
General Information
The Lionel No. 715 Tank Car was introduced in 1940 and was issued through 1942. The No. 2955 Tank Cars measure 9-inches in length. The diecast metal tank car bodies and domes were always painted black. All of the tank cars have decals for either “Shell” or “Sunoco” applied to the sides. One version of the tank car had decals for “Shell”, “S.E.P.X. 8124” and the capacity data. The other version had decals “S.U.N.X. 715”, the “Sunoco” diamond and capacity data. The tank cars have black handrails, ladders and journals. The tank cars have a black diecast frame with black steps in the corners, a black brake wheel, air brake tank and black diamond placard holders. The cars have Bettendorf scale trucks, scale couplers, and wheels. These cars were made for use on Lionel T-Rail track.
Lionel also offered the 715 Tank Car in kit form. The kit tank car was designated as 715K. When assembled and painted, the only difference between the No. 715 Tank Car and the No. 715K Tank Car is that the No. 715K Tank Car had the number “715K” on the decals on the tank.
