No. 167 WHISTLE CONTROLLERS

Below are documented 6 of the variations of the No. 167 Whistle Controller. These were first produced in 1941-42 and used for both O and OO whistle control as well as direction control. They returned after the war in 1945-46, typically being supplied with the early V, Z etc. transformers without built-in whistle & direction controls. Information on additional variations is welcomed.

Variation 1: With a BLACK base plate, this variation is identical to Variation 1 except there is no “S” suffix stamped on the base plate and there are no ejector-pin markings on top.

Note metal lower front. Variation 3: Has the “dummy button” cast into the housing and also has an open front. Has ejection pin marks on top. Has a BLACK base plate and has a “C” suffix stamped on this plate behind the number “167.” This designates this plate as belonging to a unit that has a circuit breaker.

Has black base plate, no “S”,no ejector pin marks. flat top, flat under posts. Variation 5.

Note black base plate, no “S”, no ejector pin marks or dummy button. Variation 7.

May be prewar OO

Has “dummy button” and open front, T shape shiny base, ejection pin marks in corners. Instruction sheet 167-55-2-50-TT
Variation 2 with shiny back.

Note “C” suffix stamped on this plate behind “167”shiny plated back, no ejector marks, dummy center button Variation 4.

Note “S” stamped on box for “Smoke” equipped locos; “dummy button” and open front, T shaped, shiny base, no ejection pin marks. Variation 6.

Note a “C” suffix stamped rear behind “167” & “S” also. No dummy button or ejector pin marks, matte black rear panel, S stamped on box for “Smoke” equipped locos, “C” designates this plate as belonging to a unit that has a circuit breaker. Variation 8.

According to John’ Schmid’s Authoritative Guide to Lionel’s Promotional Outfits, “the no. 1063-100 75-Watt Transformer included a green whistle control button to indicate changes made to the whistle control circuitry to prevent the Scout-type locomotives from inadvertently reversing. Its Production Control File states, “Rubber Stamp ‘1063-100’ on Bottom of Base Plate Assembly using White Ink.”
