No. 502 “027” CATALOGUED SET 1955
(same set as No. 1527)

Set #502 is an O27 set from 1955. The set components are: 1615 steam switcher, 1615T slope-back tender, 6462-125 red gondola, 6560 gray crane, 6119 red work caboose, one straight track, eight curved track, 6029 uncoupling track, and a 1014 40-watt transformer. The 1615 switcher and 1615T tender in this set have grab irons. These can be seen at the front of the engine and along the right side of the tender. The rolling stock and tender came in Middle Classic boxes and the engine was in a newly designed box. This set was one of the lower priced sets of 1955 with both the 6560 gray crane and 1615 engine/ 1615T tender with grab irons being desirable pieces.

Contents–220P/220T Santa Fe Alcos, 6476 red Lehigh Valley hopper, 6045 gray Lionel Lines tank car, 3386 operating giraffe car, 6044 Airex boxcar, 6047 SP-type caboose, 8 curved track, 4 straight track, 1008 camtrol, 1015 transformer, a set of billboards, and two 902 elevated trestle sets. The Type A set box came with orange and white graphics. The 6045, 3386, and 6047 came with arch bar trucks with fixed couplers. The 902 trestle set was made from die-cut cardboard making it difficult to find an undamaged complete set. The 3386 and 6045 are desirable uncatalogued items.

No. 1527 “027” CATALOGUED SET 1955
(same set as No. 502)

Set #1527 is an O27 set from 1955. The set components are:1615 steam switcher, 1615T slope-back tender, 6462-125 red  gondola, 6560 gray crane, 6119 red work caboose, one straight track, eight curved track, 6029 uncoupling track, and a 1014 40-watt transformer. The rolling stock and tender came in Middle Classic boxes and the engine was in a newly designed box. Lionel postwar freight set no. 1563W, circa 1956 in individual OBs and set box. The set contains; 2240P/2240C Wabash F3 AB diesel units, 6414 Evans auto loader with four autos, 3562-50 yellow operating barrel car with individual OB of 362-78 six barrels, 160 bin, and packet that has contents, 6467 miscellaneous car, 3620 rotating searchlight car, 6357 caboose, a 1033 90-watt transformer, 6019 remote control track set and a CTC lock-on. The 2240C and 3562 boxes have original cardboard inserts.

No. 1587 S “027” CATALOGED SET
(The Girls Set)

Contents: 2037-500 pink steam engine, 1130T-500 pink tender, 6436-500 lilac Lehigh Valley hopper, 6462-500 pink gondola, 6464-510 bluish green NYC Pacemaker boxcar, 6464-515 yellow MKT boxcar, 6427-500 blue Pennsylvania caboose, five straight track, eight curved track, 6029 uncoupling track, 1043-500 ivory transformer. The engine came with headlight, smoke, and Magnetraction. The gondola came with four white canisters. The transformer has a white cord, white plug, and gold colored screws. 

In 1957 this set was a marketing disaster and did not sell very well. Today it is one of the more collectable sets of the Postwar era.

As in any collectable set there are reproductions and forgeries of some of the boxes and rolling stock. You should consult a knowledgeable collector before purchasing.

1960

Lionel postwar Land-Sea and Air Gift Pack freight set no. 1805, circa 1960 in set box with original yellow die-cut cardboard insert. The set contains; 45 U.S. Marine Corps missile launcher, 3249 U.S. Marine Corps flatcar with operating helicopter and instruction sheet, 6640 U.S. Marine Corps flatcar with IRBM launcher and instruction sheet, 3820 U.S. Marine Corps flatcar with operating submarine and instruction sheet, 6824 medical caboose with stretchers and oxygen tanks, sheet of uncut billboards, 1960 original color catalog, 44-55 and 44-80 packets complete with all contents.

OUTFIT No. 2140WS 1948

Contents: 671 steam turbine locomotive, 2671W whistle tender, 2400 Maplewood Pullman,2402 Chatham Pullman, and 2401 Hillside observation. The 2671W tender was new to 1948 and the earliest version had back up lights like the one in this set. The  passenger cars were also new to 1948 with their green and gray paint design.

OUTFIT No. 2148 WS 1950

Contents: 773 Hudson steam locomotive, 2426W whistle tender, 2625 Irvington Pullman, 2627 Madison Pullman, 2628 Manhattan Pullman. The $85 price was a considerable amount of money in 1950. This was the last year for the Madison cars and the only year that they had silhouetted window inserts. The set box had blue printing on an orange field for 1950. The set box with a paste on label was used in 1951 for left over inventory.

1955

The Congressional set 2254W 1955 outfit in original boxes. 2340 Pennsylvania Tuscan five stripe GG-1 electric locomotive, 2541 Alexander Hamilton observation, 2542 Silver Range vista-dome, 2543 William Penn Pullman, 2544 Molly Pitcher Pullman, Congressional passenger cars. Instruction booklet, service stations booklet, uncut billboards included. The passenger cars are extruded aluminum with an upper and lower flat channel. The upper channel contained the word PENNSYLVANIA and the lower channel the car names.

No. 2296 W Super “O” SET 1957

The cataloged contents of this 1957 Super O set are: 2373P/2373T Canadian Pacific F3 AA units, 3 – 2552 Skyline 500 Vista Domes, and a 2551 Banff Park Observation. The set also contained a 39-5 operating packet, seven straight , one insulated straight, and twelve curved Super O track. A 2553 Blair Manor Pullman and a 2554 Craig Manor Pullman were offered as seperate sale items. The set was offered for sale as cataloged, as a four car set with four different cars, and as a six car set to broaden the appeal of the Canadian Pacific set. In 1957 the 2373P carton was made by Express and the 2373T carton was made by National. The set box had new graphics introduced for Super O. This is a highly sought-after set in the collector world and care should be taken when purchasing because forgeries and reproductions exist for the engines, cars, and engine boxes.

No. 2521 WS SUPER “O” SET
1958

Contents: 746 Norfolk & Western steam engine, 746W Norfolk & Western tender, 3361 operating log dump car, 3356 operating horse car & corral, 6805 Atomic Energy Disposal flatcar, 6430 flatcar with vans, 6424 flatcar with autos, 6557 smoking caboose, three straight, one insulated straight, & twelve curved track; and a 39-15 operating packet.

The 746 steam engine has smoke, a headlight, and Magnetraction. The 746W whistle tender is the more common short stripe version though the long stripe version has been know to show up in some sets. The 6430 flatcar came with gray or white Cooper-Jarrett vans. The 6557 smoking caboose and 6805 Atomic Energy Disposal flatcar were new items in 1958.

The set box is the basket weave used for Super O sets while the engine came in a Revised carton. The tender and rolling stock came in a combination of Bold and Late Classic boxes.
