“No. 2349 Northern Pacific EMD GP9 Road Switcher” PROTOTYPE

I would like to share with you the PROTOTYPE of the Lionel #2349 Northern Pacific EMD GP9 Switcher.  This prototype was obtained from the Lionel Archives.  It was painted black and gold on a gray plastic shell.  The red stripe is painted on the body.  The lettering and numbers are decals.  As shown in the 1959 Advance catalog, the words “Radio Equipped” are not on the short hood, this only occurred on the production models.  This prototype locomotive has a gold painted frame.  Obviously, it is “one of a kind” but does illustrate the thinking of Lionel for the mass production of this GP9 road switcher.  In addition, there are a couple of other major differences on the #2349 Northern Pacific prototype.  As indicated above, the lettering and numbers on the prototype are decals, but the lettering and numbers are both in WHITE lettering!  (not gold lettering which is found on all of the production run “Northern Pacific” switchers.)   The second major difference on the prototype is the location of the lettering “Built By Lionel”  which is below the main stamping on the Northern Pacific switcher.  On the prototype the “Built By Lionel” lettering is located below the “ORT” lettering about one-half inch to the right of the cab.  On the production run, the “Built By Lionel” lettering is completely beyond the entire “Northern Pacific” gold lettering and starts right after the last letter in the road name which is the letter “C”.  This lettering stamping is toward the nose of the switcher.  Finally, I wanted to indicate that the color scheme of the #2349 Northern Pacific” EMD GP9 switcher is gorgeous.  The gold, red, and black design makes this switcher one of the most desirable switchers for both operators and collectors alike.
