General Information

The Lionel No. 156 4-4-4 Electric Locomotive was introduced in 1917 and was issued through 1923. The No. 156 Electric Locomotive was based on the New York Central S electric locomotives. The No. 156, along with the No. 156X Electric Locomotive, was the largest locomotive in the 150 Series of electric locomotives. The only difference between the No. 156X and the No. 156 locomotives was that the No. 156X had no leading or trailing trucks. This locomotive was included as a component of several large sized early prewar passenger sets.

The No. 156 Electric Locomotive measures 10-inches in length. The locomotives have a single headlight, decorative bell, disc drive wheels, and hook and slot couplers. The No. 156 locomotive had a manual reverse controlled by a reverse lever located on the right side of the locomotive between the body and frame. The “156” and “New York Central” herald were rubber stamped in gold on the sides of the locomotive cab. These stampings were weak and are often partially or completely missing from handling and wear.

Variations of the No. 156 Electric Locomotives consist primarily of changes to the body color. The earliest locomotives had a pedestal headlight, gold painted ventilators, and a “Lionel Manufacturing.” pickup label. Later locomotives all had a strap headlight and a “Lionel Corporation” pickup label. Most of the locomotives had red painted window frames, but the No. 156 locomotive in maroon had dark olive painted window frames.
