General Information
The Lionel No. 752E and 752W Streamlined Locomotives were introduced in 1934 and were cataloged through 1941. The only difference between the No. 752E and the No. 752W was that the 752W contained a whistle. The No. 752E/W Locomotives headed sets which included either one or two No. 753 Streamlined Coaches, and a No. 754 Streamlined Observation. This Streamlined Locomotive was based on the Union Pacific M-10000 “City of Salina”. The Union Pacific name was stamped on both sides of the locomotive just below the roofline. This locomotive was Lionel’s first true scale model of an actual locomotive.
The No. 752E/W Streamlined Locomotive measures 15 1/2-inches in length. All have dual headlights with one headlight facing forward and a second facing up, and an “E” Unit reverse unit. The No. 752E/W Streamlined Locomotives and Streamlined Coaches are actually articulated. The locomotive and cars are connected by a vestibule mounted on a single truck. The vestibules also contain the light that illuminates the cars. The vestibules use a spring-loaded pin that connects the locomotive and car bodies. This was the first use of vestibules by Lionel to produce a truly articulated train set. In the photos below, the locomotives are pictured with a single vestibule attached.
The only significant variation of the No. 752E/W Streamlined Locomotives is the color of the locomotive. The locomotives either had yellow sides with a brown roof, nose, and lower portion of the locomotive or were painted entirely in an aluminum finish
