Lionel No. 250E Streamlined Steam Locomotives
General Information
The Lionel No. 250E 4-4-2 “Hiawatha” Streamlined Steam Locomotive was introduced in 1935 and was issued through 1942. The No. 250E Steam Locomotive was a nearly scale model of the Milwaukee Road “Hiawatha” Streamlined Locomotive. The No. 250E Locomotive was the most colorful steam locomotive issued by Lionel in the prewar period with an orange, gray and black paint job. The No. 250E Steam Locomotive was available for separate sale, cataloged as No. 250E. The No. 250E Steam Locomotive was also included as a component of Set No. 755W with three “Hiawatha” streamlined passenger coaches in 1935-1941 and as a component of three freight sets in 1935-1942. The No. 250E Steam Locomotive was paired with the No. 250WX Tender when included in the passenger sets and either the No. 250T/W or No. 2250W Tender when included in the freight sets. The No. 250E Steam engine and tender combined measure 23-inches in total length.
The No. 250E Locomotive has a diecast body with molded in details, marker lights, steel handrails, an aluminum winged “L” on the nose, aluminum plates with “Hiawatha” on the sides and nickel journals on the trailing truck. The locomotive has an operating headlight and a remotely operated reverse with a lever on the top of the boiler that engages or disengages the reversing unit. The number is on an aluminum plate below the cab windows. This locomotive was made for use on Lionel “072” tubular track.
The “Hiawatha” Tender has a sheet metal body painted orange and gray with added catwalk, nickel oil tank cap, nickel ladder, hand rails on the corners and aluminum “Lionel Lines” plates on the sides. The tender frame is painted maroon and has rear steps. The tender has 6-wheel trucks and nickel journals. The No. 250T/W Tender has an early style manual box coupler. The No. 2250W Tender has an early or late style operating coupler. The No. 250WX Tender has a drawbar for connection to the streamlined passenger coaches.
