General Information
The Lionel Junior No. 1700E and No. 1700 Streamlined Locomotives were introduced in 1935 and were cataloged through 1937. These locomotives were actually referred to as Power Cars in the Lionel catalogs. The only difference between the No. 1700E and the No. 1700 was that the 1700E contained a reverse unit. The No. 1700(E) Locomotives headed sets which included a No. 1701 Streamlined Coach and a No. 1702 Streamlined Observation. Some sets included two No. 1701 Streamlined Coaches. This Streamlined Locomotive was likely loosely based on the Gulf, Mobile, & Norther Railroad “Rebel”, but the locomotive was identified solely as “Lionel Lines”. This locomotive was included as a component of many low-level cataloged “Lionel Junior” prewar sets. Lionel also issued the No. 1700(E) Locomotive in many uncataged sets, typically for various department stores.
The No. 1700(E) Streamlined Locomotive measures 9 1/2-inches in length. All have a single headlight. The No. 1700(E) Streamlined Locomotives and Streamlined Coaches are not articulated as the locomotive and cars each have two complete trucks. However, the locomotive and cars have connecting vestibules to give the train a streamlined appearance. The locomotives never came with a manual reverse unit. The locomotives either have an “E” Unit reverse (No. 1700E) or no reverse (No. 1700).
Variations of the No. 1700(E) Streamlined Locomotives are generally limited to the color combination and use of a chrome finish on portions of some locomotives. In addition, the sides of the locomotives, and accompanying coaches, came in either fluted or smooth stampings.
