General Information

The Lionel No. 703 4-4-4 Electric Locomotive was first cataloged in in 1915 and issued through 1916, however, the locomotive was likely not issued until 1916. The No. 703 Electric Locomotive was based on the New York Central S electric locomotives. The No. 703 was the largest version of the four electric locomotives issued by Lionel as part of the 700 Series of electric locomotives. This locomotive was included as a component of a single passenger set.

The No. 703 Electric Locomotive measures 9 3/4-inches in length. The locomotives have a single high pedestal headlight, decorative bell, Y-shape stanchions, and early hook and slot couplers. The No. 703 locomotive had a manual reverse controlled by a reverse lever located on the right side of the locomotive between the body and frame. The “703” and “New York Central” herald were rubber stamped in gold on the sides of the locomotive cab. These stampings were weak and are often partially or completely missing from handling and wear. All of the locomotives were issued in dark green with red trim around the windows.

There are no known variations of the No. 703 Electric Locomotives.
