Lionel No. 801 Cabooses
General Information
The Lionel No. 801 Cabooses were introduced in 1915 and were issued through 1927. The No. 801 Cabooses have a four-wheel frame, tongue and slot couplers, and no journals. The No. 801 Cabooses measure 5 3/4-inches in length. The cabooses always have contrasting colors for the body and roof. The color of the cupola matched the color of the body. The frame and roof was always black. The cabooses had various rubber stampings on the sides, ends and underside to identify the number, road name and other information.
Variations of the No. 801 Cabooses include different colors for the body and cupola. The earliest cabooses had New York Central or New York New Haven and Hartford road names. All of the later cabooses had the Wabash R.R. road name. The early cabooses had “clipped” corners on the roof. Other variations related to the location and color of the rubber stampings. There are many variations in the size, color, and location of the various rubber stamped information on the cars.

1. No. 801 Caboose in brown with black roof and brown cupola (1915). The cabooses have “clipped” corners on the roof. The cars have the New York Central rubber stamped on the sides and “Lionel Lines / N.Y. / Made in U.S.A.” rubber stamped on one end. There is no number on the car and no stamping on the underside of the car.

Lionel No. 822 Cabooses
General Information
The Lionel No. 822 Cabooses were introduced in 1915 and were issued through 1926. The No. 822 Cabooses typically have tongue and slot couplers, but the last ones produced had latch couplers. The No. 822 Cabooses measure 7 1/4-inches in length. The cabooses always have contrasting colors for the body and roof. The color of the cupola matched the color of the body. The frame and roof was always black. The cabooses had various rubber stampings on the sides, ends and underside to identify the number, road name and other information. All of the cabooses carried the New York Central road name.
Variations of the No. 822 Cabooses include different colors for the body and cupola. The early cabooses had recessed ribs on the sides of the caboose. Later cabooses had projecting ribs. Other variations related to the location and color of the rubber stampings. There are many variations in the size, color, and location of the various rubber stamped information on the cars.
