General Information

The Lionel No. 820 Searchlight Cars were introduced in 1931 and were issued through 1942. The cars had a switch in the center of the searchlight base. With the switch in the center position, both lights were lit. When the switch was moved to the left or right, only one of the searchlights were lit. The two searchlights could be manually rotated. The No. 820 Searchlight Cars always had manual couplers.
The No. 820 Searchlight Cars measure 9-inches in length. The searchlight cars had contrasting colors for the searchlight base and frame. The cars had two searchlights mounted on a base. The searchlights were made of brass, nickel or painted gray. The cars were identified by a rubber stamped number on the underside of the base.
Variations of the No. 820 Searchlight Cars include different searchlight base color; brass or nickel trim; and brass, nickel, or painted gray searchlights. Early searchlight cars had latch couplers. Later searchlight cars had either manual early style box couplers or manual late style box couplers.
