Lionel No. 816 Hopper Cars
General Information
The Lionel No. 816 Box Cars were introduced in 1927 and were issued through 1942. The No. 816 Hopper Cars always had manual couplers. The No. 816 Hopper Cars measure 9-inches in length. The hopper car bodies were always painted a single color and had a black underframe. Most of the hopper cars have metal plates to identify the number and “Lionel Lines”. Late hopper cars have rubber stamped lettering.
Variations of the No. 816 Hopper Cars include different body color; brass, nickel or black trim; nickel, copper or black journals; and metal identification plates in brass or aluminum or rubber stamping. Early hopper cars have latch couplers. Later hopper cars have either early style manual box couplers or late style manual box couplers.
