Lionel No. 815 Tank Cars

General Information

The Lionel No. 815 Tank Cars were introduced in 1926 and were issued through 1942. The No. 815 Tank Cars always had manual couplers. The No. 815 Tank Cars measure 9-inches in length. The tank car bodies were always painted a single color. All of the tank cars have metal plates to identify the number and “Lionel Lines”.

Variations of the No. 815 Tank Cars include different body color; brass or nickel trim; nickel or copper journals; and metal identification plates in brass or aluminum. Early versions of the plates had sans serif (block) lettering. Later plates had serif lettering. Although the brake wheels always matched the trim color, the brake wheel stands were always nickel. Later tank cars also had decals for “Sunoco” or “Shell”. Early tank cars have latch couplers. Later tank cars have early style manual box couplers.

All of the tank cars nickel trim, nickel journals, and early style operating box couplers. Variations of the No. 2815 Tank Cars include different body color. Early tank cars have “Sunoco” decals. Later tank cars have “Shell” decals.
