GENERAL INFORMATION

The Lionel No. 814R Refrigerator Cars were introduced in 1929 and were issued through 1942. The No. 814R Refrigerator Cars were issued as an “add-on” car and were never included in a cataloged set. The No. 814R Refrigerator Cars always had manual couplers. Lionel only issued refrigerator cars for the large 810-820 Series freight cars. They were never issued for the small 800 Series or the 600 Series freight cars.
The No. 814R Refrigerator Cars measure 9-inches in length. The refrigerator cars typically had contrasting colors for the sides, roof, and frame. The cars had opening, simulated plug doors with hinges and a latch. Early refrigerator cars had metal plates to identify the number and type of car. Later refrigerator cars had rubber stamped lettering.
Variations of the No. 814R Refrigerator Cars include different body, roof and frame color; brass, nickel, or black trim; and metal identification plates or rubber stamping. Early refrigerator cars had latch couplers. Later refrigerator cars had either manual early style box couplers or manual late style box couplers.
