Lionel No. 814 Box Cars
General Information
The Lionel No. 814 Box Cars were introduced in 1926 and were issued through 1942. The No. 814 Box Cars always had manual couplers. The No. 814 Box Cars measure 9-inches in length. The box cars had contrasting colors for the body and roof. The frame was always black. The cars had sliding doors that opened. The doors always matched the car body color and have a handle in the center. The door guides typically matched the roof color, but exceptions are noted below. The box cars have metal plates to identify the number, “Automotive Furniture”, and “Lionel Lines”.
Variations of the No. 814 Box Cars include different body and roof color; different door guide color; brass or nickel trim; nickel or copper journals; large or small door handles; and metal identification plates in brass or nickel. Early box cars have latch couplers. Later box cars have either early style manual box couplers or late style manual box couplers. Early box cars also had a paper lubrication sticker on the underside. The very first box cars had a short wheelbase measuring only 4 7/8-inches between the trucks, center to center. All of the other box cars have a standard wheelbase measuring 5 1/2-inches between the trucks, center to center.

The Lionel No. 2814 Box Cars were introduced in 1938 and were issued through 1942. The No. 2814 Box Cars always had operating couplers. The No. 2814 Box Cars measure 9-inches in length. The box cars had contrasting colors for the body and roof. The frame was always black. The cars had sliding doors that opened. The doors always matched the car body color and have a handle in the center. The door guides always matched the roof color. Early box cars have metal plates to identify the number, “Automobile Furniture”, and “Lionel Lines”. Late box cars have rubber stamped lettering.
Variations of the No. 2814 Box Cars include different body and roof color; nickel or black trim; nickel or black journals; and metal identification plates in nickel or rubber stamping. Early box cars have early style operating box couplers. Later box cars have late style operating box couplers.
