Lionel No. 804 Tank Cars
General Information
The Lionel No. 804 Tank Cars (also referred to as Oil Cars) were introduced in 1923 and were issued through 1942. The No. 804 Tank Cars have a four-wheel frame. The No. 804 Tank Cars measure 6 1/2-inches in length. The tank car bodies were always painted a single color and had a black frame. The early tank cars have rubber stamped lettering. Late hopper cars have metal plates to identify the number and “Lionel Lines”.
Variations of the No. 804 tank Cars include different body color; brass, nickel or no trim; nickel, brass, copper, nickel or black center and end domes; copper, black or no journals; and rubber stamping or brass or aluminum identification plates. The early tank cars have “Lionel Tank Lines” rubber stamped on the sides of the car. These stampings were weak and are often partially or completely missing from handling and wear. The first tank cars have tongue and slot couplers. All later tank cars have latch couplers.
