Lionel No. 657 Cabooses

Lionel No. 2657 Cabooses

Lionel No. 657 Cabooses

General Information

The Lionel No. 657 Cabooses were introduced in 1934 and were issued through 1942. The No. 657 Cabooses always had manual couplers. The No. 657 Cabooses measure 6 1/2-inches in length. The cabooses all had red bodies with either red roofs and cupolas or brown roofs and cupolas. The shade of red paint used for the bodies varied from dark red to bright red. The frame was always black. Early cabooses have aluminum plates to identify the number and “Lionel Lines”. The later cabooses have rubber stamped lettering.

Variations of the No. 657 Cabooses include different shades of red for the body; roof and cupola color; different railing material and color; different window color; copper, nickel or black journals; and identification plates in brass or aluminum or rubber stamping. Early cabooses have latch couplers. Some later cabooses have late style manual box couplers. These cabooses were either issued with one or two couplers. Since couplers can be added or removed, this is not considered a variation.
