Lionel No. 655 Box Cars
General Information
The Lionel No. 655 Box Cars were introduced in 1934 and were issued through 1942. The No. 655 Box Cars always had manual couplers. The No. 655 Box Cars measure 6 1/2-inches in length. The box cars had contrasting colors for the body and roof. The frame was always black. The cars had sliding doors that opened and have a handle in the center. The door guides always matched the roof color. Early box cars have metal plates to identify the number and “Lionel Lines”. The later box cars have rubber stamped lettering.
Variations of the No. 655 Box Cars include different roof color; brass or nickel trim; copper, nickel or black journals; and brass or aluminum metal identification plates or rubber stamping. Early box cars have latch couplers. The last box cars have late style manual box couplers.
