General Information

The Lionel No. 654 Tank Cars were introduced in 1934 and were issued through 1942. The No. 654 Tank Cars always had manual couplers. The No. 654 Tank Cars measure 6 1/2-inches in length. The tank car bodies were always painted a single color and had a black frame.

Variations of the No. 654 Tank Cars include different body color; brass, nickel or black trim; copper, nickel or black journals; and either metal identification plates in brass or aluminum to identify the number and “Lionel Lines” or decals for the number, “Lionel Lines”, and capacity data. The tank cars had decals for either “Sunoco” or “Shell”. Early tank cars have latch couplers. Later tank cars have late style manual box couplers.
