Lionel No. 653 Hopper Cars
General Information
The Lionel No. 653 Hopper Cars were introduced in 1934 and were issued through 1942. The No. 653 Hopper Cars always had latch couplers. The No. 653 Hopper Cars measure 6 1/2-inches in length. The hopper car bodies were always painted Stephen Girard green and had a black frame. All of the hopper cars have metal plates to identify the number and “Lionel Lines”.
Variations of the No. 653 Hopper Cars include brass or nickel trim; copper, nickel or black journals; and metal identification plates in brass or aluminum.

1. No. 653 Hopper Car in Stephen Girard green (1934). The cars have brass plates, brass trim and copper journals.




2. No. 653 Hopper Car in Stephen Girard green (1935). The cars have brass plates, brass trim and nickel journals.




3. No. 653 Hopper Car in Stephen Girard green (1935-1938). The cars have aluminum plates, nickel trim and nickel journals.




4. No. 653 Hopper Car in Stephen Girard green (1939-1942). The cars have aluminum plates, nickel trim and black journals.




Lionel No. 2653 Hopper Cars
General Information
The Lionel No. 2653 Hopper Cars were introduced in 1938 and were issued through 1942. The No. 2653 Hopper Cars always had operating couplers. The No. 2653 Hopper Cars measure 6 1/2-inches in length. The hopper car bodies were always painted a single color and had a black frame. The early hopper cars have metal plates to identify the number and “Lionel Lines”. Late hopper cars have rubber stamped lettering.
Variations of the No. 2653 Hopper Cars include different body color; nickel or black trim; nickel or black journals; and metal identification plates in aluminum or rubber stamping. Early hopper cars have early style operating box couplers. Late hopper cars have late style operating box couplers.
