General Information

The Lionel No. 3814 Operating Merchandise Cars were introduced in 1939 and were issued through 1942. The cars had a solenoid mounted below the frame of the car that activated the unloading operation. Black or red packages were discharged from the car when activated. The door on the side of the car opened in sequence with the discharge of each package. The packages were loaded into the car through a hatch in the roof. No. 3814 Operating Dump Cars always had operating couplers.
The No. 3814 Operating Merchandise Cars measure 9-inches in length. The operating merchandise cars always had a brown body and roof, and black frame. The cars were identified with the number either decaled or rubber stamped on the sides of the car.
Variations of the No. 3814 Operating Merchandise Cars include the type and location of the number and data on the sides of the car, the color of the trim and journals, and the type of operating coupler.

The cars have a decaled Lionel “L” in the upper right corner and dimensional data on the right side of the car. The number “3814” and the capacity data appear on the left side. All of the lettering and decoration on the car is decaled. The cars have nickel trim and black journals. The cars have operating early style box couplers.


No. 3814 Operating Merchandise Car with brown body and black frame (1940-1942)

The cars have a rubber stamped Lionel “L” in the upper left corner and dimensional data on the left side of the car. The number “3814” and the capacity data appear on the right side. All of the lettering and decoration on the car is rubber stamped. The cars have black trim and black journals. The cars have operating late style box couplers.
