General Information

The Lionel No. 3659 Operating Dump Cars were introduced in 1938 and were issued through 1942. The cars had a solenoid mounted in a Bakelite housing which caused the car to dump when activated. The No. 3659 Operating Dump Cars always had operating couplers.
The No. 3659 Operating Dump Cars measure 6 1/2-inches in length. The operating dump cars always had a red bin, black Bakelite housing, and black frame. The cars were identified with the number embossed into the underside of the frame.
Variations of the No. 3659 Operating Dump Cars are limited to the type of operating coupler.

The cars have black journals. The cars have operating early style box couplers.


No. 3659 Operating Dump Car with red bin and black frame (1940)

The cars have black journals. The cars have operating late style Type 2 box couplers.

General Information


The Lionel No. 3859 Operating Dump Cars were introduced in 1938 and were issued through 1942. The cars had a solenoid mounted in a Bakelite housing which caused the car to dump when activated. The No. 3859 Operating Dump Cars always had operating couplers.
The No. 3859 Operating Dump Cars measure 9-inches in length. The operating dump cars always had a red bin, black Bakelite housing, and black frame. The cars were identified with the number embossed into the underside of the frame.
Variations of the No. 3859 Operating Dump Cars are limited to the type of frame and the type of operating coupler.

The cars have nickel trim and nickel journals. The cars have operating early style box couplers


No. 3859 Operating Dump Car with red bin and black “deep dish” frame (1940-1942)

The cars have nickel trim and black journals. The cars have operating late style box couplers. The frame was modified to accommodate the couplers used on the car.
