Lionel No. 1588 “Torpedo” Steam Locomotive

General Information

The Lionel No. 1588 “Torpedo” Steam Locomotive was introduced in 1936 and was cataloged through 1937. The No. 1588 Locomotive is powered by a mechanical or clockwork motor operated by a wind-up key. The motor has a lever that serves as a brake when engaged that protrudes through the top of the boiler. The No. 1588 Locomotive headed Set No. 1548 which included Nos. 1673, 1674, and 1675 streamlined passenger cars and Set No. 1549 which included Nos. 1512, 1514, 1515, and 1517 small 4-wheel litho freight cars. This locomotive was based on the Pennsylvania Railroad K-4 Pacific which Lionel referred to as the “Torpedo”.

The No. 1588 Steam Locomotive measures 16 1/2-inches in overall length. The 0-4-0 locomotive has a diecast boiler, nickel handrails and an aluminum plate with “1588 Lionel Lines 1588” on one side only. The motor has a whistle which operates continuously. The No. 1588 Steam Engine is always paired with the No. 1588T 4-Wheel Tender. The engine and tender are painted black.

There are no variations of the No. 1588 Steam Locomotives.
