Lionel No. 1508 Commodore Vanderbilt Steam Locomotives

General Information

The Lionel No. 1508 Commodore Vanderbilt Steam Locomotive was cataloged in 1935 only. The No. 1508 Locomotive is powered by a mechanical or clockwork motor operated by a wind-up key. The motor has a lever that serves as a brake when engaged that protrudes through the rear of the cab. The No. 1508 Locomotive headed the Mickey Mouse Circus Train in Set No. 1536. The No. 1508 Locomotive also headed one freight set and three passenger sets in 1935. This locomotive was loosely based on the New York Central J-1e “Commodore Vanderbilt” Hudson locomotive.

The 0-4-0 locomotive has a sheet metal body, nickel handrails, nickel trim and an aluminum plate with “Lionel Lines” on one side only. The drive wheels on the locomotive have eight spokes. The No. 1508 Steam Engine is usually paired with the No. 1509 Mickey Mouse 4-Wheel Tender. The Mickey Mouse stoker in the tender has a rod connected to the underside of the figure that caused the figure to “shovel” when it hit the ties in the track. The No. 1509 Tender is lithgographed in red with “Lionel” on the sides and “Mickey Mouse Stoker” on the rear. The No. 1508 / 1509 Steam Locomotive measures 10 1/2-inches in overall length.

Lionel also issued a No. 1508X Commodore Vanderbilt Steam Locomotive in 1935. This locomotive was similar to the No. 1508, but was painted black instead of red. The No. 1508X Steam Engine is always paired with the No. 1502T Lionel Lines 4-Wheel Tender. The No. 1502T Tender was lithographed in black with “Lionel Lines” in yellow lettering on the sides.

Variations in the No. 1508 Steam Locomotive include the color of the engine. Some of the locomotives have a battery operated headlight. All of the locomotives have a bell which operated continuously.

Lionel No. 1511 Commodore Vanderbilt Steam Locomotives

General Information

The Lionel No. 1511 Commodore Vanderbilt Steam Locomotive was introduced in 1936 and was cataloged through 1937. The No. 1511 Steam Locomotive is powered by a mechanical or clockwork motor operated by a wind-up key. The motor has a lever that serves as a brake when engaged that protrudes through the rear of the cab. The No. 1511 Locomotive headed a number of freight and passenger sets with varied consists. This locomotive was loosely based on the New York Central J-1e “Commodore Vanderbilt” Hudson locomotive. The No. 1511 Locomotive is very similar in appearance to the No. 1508 Locomotive. However, the drive wheels on the locomotive have 12 spokes.

The 0-4-0 locomotive has a sheet metal body, nickel handrails, nickel trim and an aluminum plate with “Lionel Lines” on one side only. The No. 1511 Steam Engine is always paired with the No. 1516 Coal Type 4-Wheel Tender. Both the No. 1511 Steam Engine and No. 1516 Tender are painted red. There is no number or identification on the tender. The locomotive has a whistle that operates continuously. The locomotive does not have a headlight or bell. The No. 1511 /1516 Steam Locomotive measures 12 1/2-inches in overall length.

There are no variations of the No. 1511 Steam Locomotives.
