General Information

The Lionel No. 1501 Steam Locomotive was introduced in 1931 and cataloged through 1932. The No. 1501 Locomotive is powered by a mechanical or clockwork motor operated by a wind-up key. The No. 1501 Locomotive headed one passenger set in both 1931 and 1932. The 0-4-0 locomotive has a sheet metal body, copper handrails and copper trim. The locomotive boiler and cab is painted red and the frame is painted black. The locomotive does not have side rods. The No. 1501 Steam Engine is always paired with the No. 1502 Ives R.R. Lines 4-Wheel Tender. The No. 1502 Tender is lithgographed in red with “1502 Ives R.R. Lines 1502” on the sides. The No. 1501 / 1502 Steam Locomotive measures 9 1/4-inches in overall length.

The early version of the No. 1501 Steam Locomotive has a screw key that normally remains in the locomotive. In addition, the early version of the locomotive does not have a brake or a bell. The later version of the locomotive has a removable key. It also has a lever that serves as a brake when engaged that protrudes through the rear of the cab and a bell that operates continuously.

General Information

The Lionel No. 1506 Steam Locomotive was introduced in 1931 and cataloged through 1935. The No. 1506 Locomotive is powered by a mechanical or clockwork motor operated by a wind-up key. Locomotives with a removable key have a lever that serves as a brake when engaged that protrudes through the rear of the cab The No. 1506 Locomotive headed a number of freight and passenger sets. The 0-4-0 locomotive has a sheet metal painted body. The No. 1506 Steam Engine is paired with a variety of tenders including the No. 1507 Ives R.R. Lines Tender lithographed in red, No. 1502 Lionel-Ives Lines Tender lithographed in black, No. 1502T Lionel Lines Tender lithographed in black, and No. 1509 Mickey Mouse Tender lithographed in red. The No. 1506 / Tender Steam Locomotive measures between 9 3/4-inches and 10 3/4 7-inches in overall length depending upon the tender.

There are a number of variations of the No. 1506 Locomotive. The earliest locomotives had a screw key instead of the usual removable key and no operating bell. Other variations include the color of the body, the color of the drive wheels, and copper or nickel handrails and trim. Some of the locomotives have a battery operated headlight and are identified as No. 1506L.
