General Information
The Lionel No. 1536 Mickey Mouse Circus Set was available for one year only in 1935. The Mickey Mouse Circus Set featured a Mickey Mouse Circus Train. The train set was comprised of a No. 1508 Commodore Vanderbilt-Style Steam Engine with a No. 1509 Mickey Mouse Tender and three Circus Cars. The tender included a Mickey Mouse figure shoveling coal. The Circus Cars were not numbered, but included a Dining Car, a Band Car, and an Animal Car.
The No. 1508 Steam Locomotive is powered by a mechanical or clockwork motor operated by a wind-up key. The engine had a bell that operated continuously and a battery operated headlight. The motor has a lever that serves as a brake when engaged located inside the cab. The steam engine is painted bright red. The tender and cars were made of tin and were colorfully decorated with lithography depicting many of the Disney characters. The Mickey Mouse stoker in the tender had a rod connected to the underside of the figure that caused the figure to “shovel” when it hit the ties in the track. The three 4-wheel Circus Cars share a common frame. The frames and roofs of the cars and the tender is lithographed in red and gold. The tender and cars have tongue and slot couplers.
In addition to the Mickey Mouse train, the set included a composition Mickey Mouse barker figure that stood 5-inches tall and a cardboard circus tent, Sunoco gas station, truck, billboard, and tickets. Also included in the set were two sections of straight and eight sections of curve 2-Rail “027” track.
