Ives Transition Set No. 1601 or No. 1611, 1931 – 1932
Ives Transition Set No. 1601 or No. 1611
1931 – 1932
Ives Set No. 1601 or No. 1611. This is a Lionel/Ives Transition Set issued by Lionel under the Ives name in 1931 and 1932. Set No. 1611 from 1932 is pictured and consists of Ives No. 1651 Electric Locomotive, two Ives No. 1690 Coaches, and an Ives No. 1691 Observation. Set No. 1601 from 1931 is similar, but included only one No. 1690 Coach. The loco and cars are decorated in yellow/blue litho. The loco did not have a reverse and was “forward only”. This set was issued in a unique “Tunnel” set box. Owners of the set were encouraged to cut out the tunnel openings to create a tunnel to add play value to the set. This is likely a factor in why so few of these set boxes survived. This set box is particularly unique because it is stamped “Special” instead of the cataloged Set No. 1601 or No. 1611. Whether the actual contents of this Special Set differed from the cataloged versions of the set is unknown.
