Lionel No. 710, 712 Passenger Cars
General Information
The Lionel No. 710 Pullman and No. 710 Observation Passenger Cars were introduced in 1924 and were issued through 1933. The No. 710 and No. 712 were the largest passenger cars issued by Lionel during the Classic Period. These passenger cars were included as components of a few high end cataloged passenger sets. They were also included in at least one uncataloged or “Special” set.
The No. 710 and 712 Passenger Cars measure 11 1/4-inches in length. The sides of the cars have a metal insert, painted a contrasting color, to create the window inserts and identification of the car number and type. The doors are separate pieces and open. The cars have a clear celluloid strip in the windows and a thin white or blue celluloid strip covering the upper portion of the windows. The cars are all illuminated.
Variations of the No. 710 and No. 712 Passenger Cars include changes to the body color, roof color, insert color, door color, and journals. Early cars were issued with four wheel trucks with 500-Series Standard Gauge wheels. Late cars had six wheel trucks with “O” Gauge wheels. All of the cars have air tanks underneath the car and separate brass steps. The cars all have latch couplers. The cars all have “The Lionel Lines” rubber stamped above the windows, except as noted otherwise, below.
