GENERAL INFORMATION
The Lionel No. 603 Pullman and No. 604 Observation Passenger Cars were introduced in 1931 and were issued through 1938. The No. 603 and No. 604 were small passenger cars and shared the same body as the No. 607 and No. 608 passenger cars all issued by Lionel during the Classic Period. These passenger cars were included as components of many smaller low end or entry level passenger sets. They were also included in many uncataloged or “Special” sets.
The No. 603 and 604 Passenger Cars measure 7 1/2-inches in length. The sides of the cars have a single metal insert, painted a contrasting color, to create the doors, window inserts, and identification of the car number and type. Many of the car have a clear or frosted celluloid strip in the windows. The cars were not illuminated.
Variations of the No. 603 and No. 604 Passenger Cars include changes to the body color, roof color, insert color, observation railing, and journals. Most of the cars have air tanks underneath the car, but later cars have “fish bellies”. The cars all have latch couplers.
