GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT TWO BAY HOPPERS
LEHIGH VALLEY HEAT STAMPING ON THE SIDES OF HOPPER CARS
From 1948 until 1963 all Lehigh Valley hoppers were fully heat stamped and included the following
:”NEW 1-48″”BUILT 1-48/ LIONEL (car number)”
Starting in 1963 Lionel began removing heat stamping, and eventually removed it all creating a blank hopper.
TRUCKS USED ON HOPPER CARS
In the 1960’s Lionel began varying the trucks used on hopper cars. AAR and ARCH BAR trucks were used both operating and non operating and dummy. In general terms Lionel intended 6076 would have 2 non operating trucks and 6176 would have 1 operating and 1 non operating trucks. This said Lionel did not follow this consistently and and many variations were created and are documented below.
TYPES OF HOPPERS
Lionel made the two bay hoppers from 1948 thru 1969. During that time they made changes in them. Collectors have agreed to use these 6 types to describe them.
TYPE 1 1948 – 1950
painted black or maroon
with white heat stamped lettering
with brake wheels
Look closely at the bottom of the center strut on the side of the car. TYPE 1 has rivets forming the top of a triangle but the rivets are missing for the base along the bottom edge of the side. With corner gussets and large round center mold mark
TYPE 2 1951 – 1954
painted black with white heat stamped lettering
The same description as TYPE ! with the openings for the 3456 operating hopper car added with brake wheels
TYPE 3 1951 – 1955
painted black, maroon, gray or shinny red
with white, red, maroon or yellow heat stamped lettering
with brake wheels
