GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT QUAD HOPPERS

EARLIEST SHELL WITHOUT SPREADER BAR HOLE OR PLUG

In 1954 Lionel first produced the quad hopper it was only made as a covered hopper.  The cover help support the sides when it was picked up from the top in the middle.

SHELL WITH SPREADER BAR HOLE

In 1955 Lionel began offering an open hopper car. To help support the long sides from warping or breaking a spreader bar was added that required holes be molded into the sides of the shell.

SHELL SHOWING PLUGGED SPREADER BAR HOLE

In order to not have holes in the sides of the shells when they were used for a covered hoppers Lionel made a plug in the mold.  Look closely where the hole would be and the outline of this plug can be observed, under the N in AND. In 1957 and after Lionel stopped using this plug and all shells produced had holes.
