General Information
The Lionel No. 189 Villa was introduced in 1923 and was cataloged through 1932. It was also available as an uncataloged item and on Scenic Plots through 1942. The No. 189 Villa was constructed of steel with all enameled components with the exception of the chimney. The No. 189 Villa is two-story with attic and has a base, front porch, shed roof, a chimney on one side that extends down to the base and painted window and door inserts. The villas come with either four dormers or no dormers on the roof. The No. 189 Villa is illuminated by a single bulb mounted on a bracket inside the house. The underside of the villa typically has either a decal or is rubber stamped with the Lionel identification and “No. 189 Villa” in black. Later villas and villas intended for use on scenic plots have unmarked bases. The No. 189 Villa is 5 3/8 x 4 7/8 x 5 1/2-inches high.
The No. 189 Villa was primarily sold separately. However, Lionel did issue a set of one No. 189 Villa, one No. 191 Villa and two No. 184 Bungalows as a No. 192 Illuminated Villa Set from 1923 through 1932.
The No. 189 Villa was available in a wide variety of painted color combinations. In addition, villas came with either four or no roof dormers and painted or lithographed chimneys. Painted window inserts may vary in color on first and second floors and attic windows on the same villa.
