Introduction
Everyone Loves Box Cars is a reference guide … the definitive guide to all known variations of the postwar Lionel 6464 box cars. Authored by Terral Klaassen and edited by Gerry Worner, it was published in 2025. Several other listings since the mid-1960s have listed fewer variations, with many of those listings containing errors and misleading information. Klaassen and Worner have listed all known variations serially for each of the 29 numbered cars, meaning for each car the first variation is listed as variation number KW1, and then going up from there. For the 6464-100, the orange/blue feather variations have their own numbers -100 (orange) KW1 – KW11, and the silver/yellow feather cars have their own numbers -100 (silver) KW1 – KW20. The detailed listing tabulates all variables in a spreadsheet format showing all pertinent aspects of 525 line entries … variations of production 6464 cars (not including prototypes, convention cars, etc.). And when the combinations of all door mold colors, door paint shades, etc. are considered, over 1200 variations are documented.
Klaassen and Worner offer the KW numbers as a standardized way of discussing variations … a 21st century standard that can be used for many years going forward. By saying “I am looking at the -500 variation KW6” collectors using that reference guide can together find a 6464-500 Timken Type IIB body on a gray body shell, painted yellow, etc. Or, they can compare to -500 var. KW10 which is similar but with yellow-orange paint. Everyone Loves Box Cars is available from www.KlaassenTrainsAndHobbies.com.
Many 6464 variations are shown on CornucopiaOfToyTrains.com and the KW numbers will be added underneath each box car’s main photo. We will be adding more links over the next few months.
