General Information

The Lionel No. 156X 0-4-0 Electric Locomotive was introduced in 1923 and was issued through 1924. The No. 156X Electric Locomotive was based on the New York Central S electric locomotives. The No. 156X, along with the No. 156 Electric Locomotive, was the largest locomotive in the 150 Series of electric locomotives. The only difference between the No. 156X and the No. 156 locomotives was that the No. 156X had no leading or trailing trucks. This locomotive was included as a component of two large sized early prewar passenger sets.

The No. 156X Electric Locomotive measures 10-inches in length. The locomotives have a single strap headlight, decorative bell, spoked drive wheels, Y shape stanchions with wire handrails, and hook and slot couplers. The No. 156X locomotive had a manual reverse controlled by a reverse lever located on the right side of the locomotive between the body and frame. The No. 156X locomotives were always numbered “156”. The “156” and “New York Central” herald were rubber stamped in gold on the sides of the locomotive cab. These stampings were weak and are often partially or completely missing from handling and wear.

The only significant variation of the No. 156X locomotives was body color. Most of the locomotives had red painted window frames, but the No. 156X locomotive in dark red had dark olive painted window frames.
