General Information
The Lionel No. 153 0-4-0 Electric Locomotive was introduced in 1924 and was issued through 1925. The No. 153 Electric Locomotive was based on the New York Central S electric locomotives. The No. 153 was a small electric locomotive, just slightly larger than the No. 150 and No. 158 electric locomotives in the 150 Series of electric locomotives. This locomotive was included as a component of several small early prewar passenger and freight sets.
The No. 153 Electric Locomotive measures 5 3/4-inches in length. The locomotives have a single headlight, decorative bell, spoke wheels, strap headlights, and hook and slot couplers. The No. 153 locomotive had a manual reverse controlled by a reverse rod located at either end of the locomotive. The “153” and “New York Central” herald were rubber stamped in gold on the sides of the locomotive cab. These stampings were weak and are often partially or completely missing from handling and wear.
Variations of the No. 153 Electric Locomotives consist primarily of changes to the body color. The earliest locomotives had Y-shape stanchions with wire handrails. Later locomotives all had brass or nickel stamped handrails, or embossed handrails. All of the locomotives have red window trim.
